5 Steps to Being Your Own Pace Setter: Embracing Individuality While Learning from Others

Have you ever come across the saying “Run your own race” and dismissed it as a cliché? I must admit, I used to feel the same way. However, over time, I’ve come to recognise the true value behind those words.

We often hear people advising us to do our own thing, to live life on our own terms. And they’re absolutely right. Each of us has a unique journey to embark upon, filled with personal dreams, aspirations, and desires. But here’s the thing: there’s also immense value in following someone else’s pace, at least for a while, as we discover our own rhythm.

Think about marathons and 10k races. Experienced runners know the importance of sticking with a specific pace to maintain endurance throughout the race. Some individuals, known as pace setters, carry signs or balloons displaying the desired pace that they will run at, giving other runners the opportunity to tag along and achieve their time goals.

Life, in its own way, has pace setters too. These are individuals who have excelled in their fields and demonstrate a consistent track record of performance. While you may have the urge to immediately forge your own path, there is wisdom in sitting on the metaphorical shoulder of these pace setters, absorbing their experiences and lessons until you find your own pace, that you are confident of maintaining.

Consider them as mentors, even if they’re unaware of the profound impact they have on your journey. Even if you have never met them or are unlikely to meet them, simply by observing their actions, and learning from their triumphs and challenges, you gain valuable insights that can shape your own approach to success.

Think of it as a silent apprenticeship. As you master the field, honing your skills and building confidence, there will come a point where you’re ready to silently overtake those who once guided you. You’ll be prepared to set your own pace, drawing upon the lessons learned from those who came before you.

Running your own race doesn’t mean disregarding the experiences of others. It’s about calibrating your pace based on their wisdom and incorporating their strategies into your own approach. Running a race, whether it’s a literal marathon or the race of life, requires a strategy.

To help you become your own pacesetter and embrace your individuality while learning from others, here are five steps to consider:

  1. Self-Reflection: Take the time to reflect on your goals, passions, and values. Understand what truly matters to you and what you want to achieve in life. This self-awareness will serve as your compass, as you navigate your journey.
  2. Identify Role Models: Look for individuals who have achieved success in the areas you aspire to excel in. These can be famous figures or even people in your immediate circle who embody qualities you admire. Study their journeys, learn from their strategies, and extract the principles that resonate with you.
  3. Learn and Adapt: Absorb the lessons from your role models and apply them to your own life. Understand the principles behind their success and adapt them to fit your unique circumstances. Embrace a growth mindset, continuously seeking knowledge and refining your approach.
  4. Find Mentors: Actively seek mentors who can guide you on your path. Connect with individuals who have walked a similar journey and can offer guidance and support. Mentors can provide valuable insights, challenge your perspectives, and help you navigate obstacles along the way.
  5. Forge Your Own Path: Finally, as you gain confidence and expertise, it’s time to set your own pace. Trust in your abilities, draw upon the wisdom you’ve acquired, and carve out your unique path. Embrace your individuality and let your authentic self shine through.

So, in closing, embrace your individuality and the unique journey you’re on. But don’t be afraid to learn from others, adapt their strategies, and calibrate your pace until you find the perfect rhythm for your own race. There’s no shame in seeking guidance and inspiration from those who have travelled similar paths before you.
